- octobre 2019 : 1ère réunion du Comité de lecture créé dans le cadre de la gestion du Fonds Documentaire sur saint Léonard à la Bibliothèque Municipale de Saint-Léonard de Noblat.

Visite à St-Léonard de Noblat du Père Charles Sweeney, aumônier de prisons en Angleterre et du Frère Ian Mc Donald. Une rencontre sera organisée avec les organismes limousins ayant une activité similaire en Limousin.

 

- 6 novembre 2019 : Fête de saint Léonard sur tous les continents. /

 

October 2019: First meeting of the Reading Committee, which was created within the framework of the management of the collection of documents on Saint Leonard, in the municipal library of

St Léonard-de-Noblat.

Visit to St-Léonard de Noblat by Father Charles Sweeney, the chaplain to prisons in England, accompanied by Father Ian McDonald. Both are involved in the rehabilitation of prisoners after they finish their sentences.  A meeting will be arranged with those who have a similar vocation in the Limousin.

28 juin 2019, Dépôt de la maquette de l’église S. Leonhard de Linden - Markt Erlbach (Moyenne Franconnie) dans une chapelle de la Collégiale de Saint-Léonard de Noblat /

28^th June 2019 : the placing of a scale model of the Church of St Leonhard of Linden – Markt Erlbach (Moyenne  Franconnie) in a chapel of the collegiate church of St-Léonard de Noblat.

 

L’Eglise de Linden (Grande Commune de Markt Erlbach, Moyenne Franconie, Allemagne) est dédiée à Sankt Leonhard et un paroissien,  Monsieur Klaus Deutschländer a construit la maquette de l’église.

La communauté de Markt Erlbach a décidé de l’offrir à la communauté de Saint-Léonard de Noblat pour qu’elle soit exposée dans la Collégiale parmi celles qui y figurent déjà et qui représentent d’autres églises d’Europe connues pour leur attachement à saint Léonard.

C’est dans le cadre du jumelage entre les villes de Markt Erlbach et de Panazol (Haute-Vienne, France) que l’opération s’est concrétisée.

Une délégation de 35 personnes comprenant des Elus allemands, des Membres des Comités de Jumelage et des Elus de Panazol a été accueillie par les représentants de Saint-Léonard de Noblat le 28 juin 2019 pour installer la maquette dans la Collégiale. /

 

The church of Linden (Grande Commune of Markt Erlbach, Germany) is dedicated to St Leonard. One of the parishioners, Herr Klaus Deutschländer, constructed the scale model of the church.

The community of Markt Erlbach decided to present this model to the community of St Léonard de Noblat so that it could be installed in the collegiate church built around the tomb of St Leonard, where numerous other models of churches dedicated to St Leonard from France and Europe are exposed.

It is in the framework of a twinning between the towns of Markt Erlbach in Germany and Panazol in France that the operation came to fruition.

 

A delegation of 35 people, made up of local council members from Germany, members of the twinning committees and local council officials from Panazol, were welcomed by the representatives of St Léonard-de-Noblat on 28^th June 2019 to formally install the scale model in the Collegiate church.

Le lundi de Pentecôte, depuis 1274, une procession historiée en l’honneur  du bienfaisant

saint Léonard remplace à Léau les Oboles Banales payées  à l’abbaye de Saint-Trond.

La statue miraculeuse de saint Léonard (ca 1300) est descendue de son autel puis placée au milieu du transept, parée de vêtements épiscopaux, avant d’entrer dans le cortège.

Cette année, les fêtes, présidées par le Cardinal de Kesel, étaient particulièrement attendues car elles coïncidaient avec  l’achèvement de la  restauration de l’église après 5 années de travaux importants.

La Confrérie de Sint Leonardus recevait des délégations de Saint-Léonard de Noblat et de Zuidschote. /

 

On the Monday of Pentecost, ever since 1274, an historical procession in honour of St Leonard replaces in Léau the ‘Oboles Banales’ payed to the Abbey of St Trond.

The Miraculous Statue of St Leonard (sculpted around1300) is taken down from its altar and placed in the middle of the transept, then clothed in episcopal vestments before being taken in procession.

 

This year the festival, presided over by Cardinal de Kesel, was particularly awaited as it coincided with the achievement of major restoration work on the church after 5 years of effort. The Confraternity of St Leonardus welcomed delegations from St Léonard-de-Noblat and Zuidschote.

L’invocation (protection) de saint Léonard était le fait des mineurs de Liège et grands environs.

Leur phrase en wallon (langue plutôt que patois) était : Al wåde di D’ju, di sinte Bå et sin Linå qui signifie : à la grâce de Dieu, de sainte Barbe et saint Léonard. Elle était prononcée en entrant dans la cage de descente.

 Dans les autres régions minières francophones de Belgique (Charleroi, borinage, plus à l’ouest), on invoquait sainte Barbe et saint Éloi.

Le charbon de Liège, plus maigre (anthracite) était utilisé dans le chauffage ménager.

Les charbonnages liégeois ont fermé dans les années « soixante-dix / septante ».  Le  dernier en 1980. Il est encore visitable, en descendant par la cage : Blegny-Mine. :

 

The protection of St Leonard was the belief of the miners of Liège and all of its surroundings.

Their motto in wallon (a language rather than a local patois) was: ‘Al wade di D’ju, di sinte Ba et sin Lino’ which means ‘thanks to God’s grace and St Barbe and St Leonard’. This was recited each time the miners entered the lift which took them down into the mine.

In other mining regions in the French-speaking part of Belgium (Charleroi, Borinage further to the west) the invocation was more to St Barbe and St Eloi.

Coal from Liège (anthracite) was used to heat homes.

 

The coal mines of Liège were closed in the 1970s. The last mine closed in 1980. It is still possible to visit it by descending in the lift : it is called Blegny-Mine.

30 mai au 2 juin, journées de l’amitié entre Drusenheim et Saint-Léonard de Noblat /

30^th May to 2^nd June: friendship visit to St Léonard-de-Noblat, by its twin town of Drusenheim in Alsace.

Lors du repli des populations installées à proximité de la frontière franco-allemande en septembre 1939, les habitants de Saint-Léonard (Haute-Vienne) ont accueilli 1600 habitants de Drusenheim (Alsace) en exil. Depuis 1969, des journées de l’amitié entre les populations sont organisées en souvenir de cet événement historique.

En 2019, elles ont eu lieu à Saint-Léonard de Noblat et ont été marquées par différentes activités communes : rencontres musicales et sportives, assemblées conviviales, commémoration au Monument aux Morts et recueillement au cimetière devant les tombes de ceux qui sont morts durant leur exil.

During the displacement of the population living in the frontier region with Germany in September 1939, the citizens of St Léonard-de-Noblat gave hospitality to 1600 citizens of Drusenheim during their exile. Since 1969 these friendship visits have been organised between the populations of the two towns in memory of these events.

In 2019 they took place in St Léonard-de-Noblat and consisted of many activities, such as musical and sporting events, meetings, paying homage at the War memorial and at the graves of those who died during their exile.

Quarantième anniversaire de la dédicace de l’église principale au cœur divin de Jésus et journée de fête en remerciement de la sauvegarde de la population lors du tremblement de terre  du 11 juin 1693 et de la coulée de lave du 5 février 1865 /

  This was the 40th anniversary of the dedication of the main church to the Divine Heart of Jesus, followed by a festival in gratitude for the protection of the population from the earthquake on 11th June 1693 and from the flow of lava on 5th February 1865.

Eglise San Leonardo in Chieri / The Church of San Leonardo in Chieri.

L’église San Leonardo in Chieri est mentionnée pour la première fois dans une bulle papale de 1141.  Elle est à l’origine propriété des Chevaliers de l'ordre du Temple (attesté à partir de  1190). 

L'église romane primitive, est détruite par un incendie en 1285 et ce n’est qu’en 1410, devenue propriété des Chevaliers de l’Ordre de Jérusalem, qu’elle pourra être reconstruite.

Après la disparition de l’Ordre de Jérusalem, l’église est désaffectée et achetée par un forgeron qui laisse se perdre la série de fresques sur la vie de San Leonardo.

En 1934, Les Salésiens reprennent l’édifice et  y apportent des modifications importantes.

Aujourd’hui, la structure interne de l'église présente une nef centrale avec une voûte en berceau et deux nefs latérales. La façade gothique a des carreaux de terre cuite qui décorent le portail et qui reproduisent la croix grecque en alternance avec la croix maltaise. /

 The Church of San Leonardo in Chieri was mentioned for the first time in a Papal Bull in 1141. It was originally the property of the Knights Templar (attested as from 1190). The church built in a primitive Romanic architecture was destroyed in a fire in 1285 and it was not until 1410 when it became the property of the knights of the Order of Jerusalem that its reconstruction was undertaken.

After the Order disappeared the church was deconsecrated and became the property of a blacksmith who let the frescoes on the life of Saint Leonard deteriorate.

Tout au long de ces fêtes, se sont succédées des célébrations ferventes : exposition de l’icône de Notre Dame de Fatima, adoration du Saint Sacrement, messe en faveur des vocations etc. Elles se sont terminées le 26 mai par l’imposante procession du Saint dans les rues de la ville.

Toutes les festivités sont organisées par la Vénérable Confrérie de San Leonardo Abate, qui se distingue  par sa couleur bleu clair empruntée aux nobles et vaillants Normands qui ont probablement apporté le culte de S. Leonardo à Capizzi dans l’un des plus anciens quartiers de la ville.

Un groupe important de la Confrérie de Partinico - Palerme était également présent le 26 mai avec les très précieuses Reliques du saint./

 

Throughout these festivities there have been ardent celebrations, one after the other : Exhibition of the icon of Our Lady of Fatima, adoration of the Blessed Sacrement, a mass to encourage vocations to the religious life, and so on. They culminated on 26^th May with the impressive procession of the saint in the streets of the town.

All of the ceremonies are organised by the Venerable Confraternity of San Leonardo Abate, which is distinguished by its light blue colour borrowed, historically, from the Norman nobility, who probably brought the cult of San Leonardo to Capizzi, one of the oldest parts of the town.

 

A delegation of the Confraternity of Partinico-Palermo was also present bearing the precious relics of the saint.

Dimanche 26 avril 2019, à Beek et Donk, a eu lieu la joute traditionnelle de tir de Laarbeeks- Koning.

Les 5 guildes de la commune participaient : St. Antonius Guild Brook, St. Leonard Guild Donk,

St. Margaret Guild et O.L.Vilde Guild de Aarle-Rixtel et St. Servatius Guild de Lieshout.
Cette année, Andre van Nunen de la guilde Saint-Léonard est devenu roi des 5 guildes. Il a fait le serment traditionnel et reçu le Laarbeeks koningsschild. /

On Sunday 26^th April 2019 at Beek en Donk, the traditional shooting competition of Laarbeeks-Koning took place. All 5 guilds of the community took part : they are the St Antonius Guild Brook, the St Leonards Guild Donk, the St Margaret Guild and the O.L.Vilde Guild from Aarle-Rixtel and the St Servatius Guild from Lieshout.

 This year André van Nunen of the Guild of St Leonard became the king of the 5 guilds. He made the traditional oath and received the ‘Laarbeeks koningschild’

Dimanche 26 mai 2019, la Guilde Saint Leonard a organisé  le Donckse We-ing, une cérémonie annuelle en plein air qui était déjà célébrée à l’époque de l’ancienne chapelle construite en 1422.
Cette année, le pasteur Jos Verbraeken a annoncé qu'il quittait Beek et Donk après neuf ans. /

 

On 26^th May 2019 the St Leonard Guild organised the Donkse We-ing, an annual ceremony in the open air which has been celebrated since the ancient chapel was built in 1422. This year the pastor Jo Verbraeken announced that he was leaving Bee ken Donk after a ministry of 9 years.

Le lundi de Pentecôte, la traditionnelle randonnée à vélo a été organisée par la Guilde et les éclaireurs afin de collecter des fonds pour une cause humanitaire. L'argent collecté cette année sera utilisé pour préparer une journée conviviale pour les personnes âgées victimes d’un handicap. /

 

On Pentecost Monday, the traditional trek on bicycles was organised by the Guild and the Scouts to collect funds for a humanitarian project. The money collected this year will be used to organise a day out for senior citizens who are disabled.

Atouguia da Baleia:  20 juin 2019, la confrérie de Saint Léonard de Zoutleeuw (Belgique) en visite à la paroisse d'Atouguia da Baleia (Portugal) /

On 20^th June 2019 the Confraternity of St Leonard from Zoutleeuw, in Belgium, visited the parish of Atouguia da Baleia in Portugal.

La confrérie de Saint Léonard à Zoutleeuw (Belgique) organise un voyage annuel dans une paroisse où saint Léonard est vénéré. La confrérie a visité le Portugal en juin 2019. Le jour de la Fête-Dieu,  jeudi le 20 juin 2019, Ademar Vala Marques nous a chaleureusement accueilli à Atouguia Da Baleia. La Fête du Saint-Sacrement est un jour férié au Portugal et dans certains pays de tradition catholique. À 15 heures, nous avons participé à une messe solennelle dans l’église de Saint Léonard. L’église était complètement remplie et c’était réconfortant d’entendre toute la communauté paroissiale chanter. Notre prêtre a assisté à la messe solennelle et à la procession.

Après la célébration de la messe, nous avons rejoint la procession de l'église Saint-Léonard à l'église de Notre-Dame de la Conception.  Pendant la procession de la Fête-Dieu, le prêtre porte l’Eucharistie dans un ostensoir au milieu des rues et des places qui étaient pavoisées de guirlandes. Dans la procession, le conseil de notre confrérie a porté notre relique de St Leonard.

 This is an annual travel project with the aim of visiting a place where Saint Leonard is venerated. The confraternity were welcomed by Ademar Vala Marques. The feast of the Blessed Sacrament is a public holiday in Portugal as it is in a number of countries which have a Catholic tradition. At 3 o’clock the Confraternity took part in high mass in the Church of St Leonard. The church was full to capacity and it was impressive to hear the whole congregation join in the singing. The Belgian priest who accompanied the confraternity concelebrated the mass and participated in the procession.

After the mass the confraternity joined the procession from the Church of St Leonard to the Church  of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. During the procession of the Blessed Sacrament, the priest carried the host in a monstrance through the streets strewn with flowers. The confraternity from Belgium carried their relic of Saint Leonard in the procession. They gave their thanks to Ademar and the local authorities for their generous welcome/

 

Slovaquie / Slovakia

 

Lenartov:   Une délégation de Lenartov (Slovaquie) est venue en pèlerinage et visite d’amitié à Saint-Léonard de Noblat les 11 et 12 mai 2019. /

A delegation from Leonartov in Slovakia came on a pilgrimage to St Léonard-de-Noblat on 11^th and 12^th May 2019.

 

Une importante délégation de Lenartov (la ville de Léonard) comprenant le Maire, un adjoint, Jan Bortnik, l’énergique conseiller délégué aux affaires culturelles, et les deux prêtres de la paroisse a été reçue à Saint-Léonard de Noblat les 11 et 12 mai 2019

Tout au long de la journée du samedi 11 mai, les 2 communautés ont partagés des moments de découverte et d’amitié : visites culturelles, plantation d’un arbre du souvenir apporté en cadeau par la délégation de Lenartov, participation commune à une cérémonie religieuse en slovaque dans la Collégiale, soirée festive animée par Jan Bortnik avec ses instruments de musique traditionnels et enfin échanges de cadeaux.

 Le dimanche 12, avant le départ de la délégation, tous se sont retrouvés à la grand-messe dominicale  concélébrée par le Curé Jean-Marin Longin de St-Léonard de Noblat et les prêtres de Lenartov. /

The delegation comprised the mayor and assistant mayor of the town as well as Jan Bortnik, the very dynamic councillor for external relations, and two priests from the parish.

Throughout the two days, both communities shared the discovery of friendship through visits to places of cultural interest, planting a memorial tree (a gift from the delegation), participation in a joint mass in Slovak celebrated in the Collegiate Church of St Leonard-de-Noblat, followed by a festive get together when Jan Bortnik demonstrated his skills on a variety of traditional Slovak musical instruments. The evening ended with an exchange of gifts. 

On their final day the delegation from Leonartov joined the parishioners of St Léonard-de-Noblat in the celebration of Sunday Mass concelebrated by Father Jean-Marin Longin and the priests from Slovakia.

Eglise Saint-Linhart d‘Udrč (région de Karlovy Vary) /

The Church of Saint-Linhart d’Udrc (region of Karlovy Vary)

L'église gothique d‘Údrč a été fondée au XIVème siècle. La première mention écrite remonte à 1378. En 1435, le curé Adalbert s’installe à Udrč, probablement en fuite devant les hussites (campagnes militaires des féodaux et de l’Eglise catholique contre les paysans et les partisans de Jan Hus en Bohême de 1420 à 1434).

En août 1783, l‘église est incendiée puis reconstruite dans un style baroque.

Pendant le régime communiste, l'église a été très délabrée.

Depuis 1994, elle est protégée en tant que monument culturel de la République tchèque et, grâce aux efforts des autochtones et de résidents allemands locaux, des travaux importants de rénovation ont pu être réalisés. /

This church, built in the gothic style, was founded in the 14th century. The first written mention was in 1378. In 1435 Father Adalbert came to Udrc, probably fleeing from the Hussites, the followers of Jan Hus a protestant reformer in Bohemia between 1420 and 1434. In August 1783 the church was burned then reconstructed in a baroque style. During the communist regime the church fell into disrepair.

Since 1994 it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and thanks to the efforts of local people and German residents, important works have been undertaken.

 

 

Ancienne Eglise Saint Linhart de DOLNÍ VLTAVICE (Unterwuldau) /

The ancient Church of Saint Linhart de Dolni Vltavice (Unterwuldau)

 

 

Dans l’ancienne Eglise Saint Linhart, devant l’autel, se trouvait un banc que les habitants appelaient « le banc des bœufs ». Ils s’y asseyaient et priaient saint Léonard de protéger leurs animaux. A Dolní Vltavice, on offrait aussi à saint Linhart des figurines en fer représentant les animaux.

Dans les histoires et les contes tchèques, le forgeron a souvent des pouvoirs extraordinaires. C’est pour cela qu’il lui était attribué le devoir important de forger ces figurines-offrandes.

Une église en bois est mentionnée à Dolni Vltavice déjà en 1355. En 1767, le compte Josef de Schwarzenberg a fait bâtir la nouvelle église qui a été consacrée à Saint Linhart à son achèvement en 1770. L’église était en forme de rotonde de 34 m, avec une haute tour en forme de « bulbe ».

Une construction de barrage a scellé le destin de Dolní Vltavice. La direction du barrage de Lipno a racheté l’Eglise, le cimetière ainsi que l’ensemble des parcelles attenantes et a décidé de tout démolir. En mai 1958 le toit de l’église a été enlevé et l’église dynamitée./

In front of the altar in the ancient Church of Saint Linhart there was a bench which the inhabitants called ‘The Cattle Bench’. They sat on it and prayed to St Linhart to protect their animals.

In Dolni Vitavice offerings of animals in wrought iron were presented to St Linhart.

In their traditional stories and tales in Czech folklore blacksmiths are often portrayed as having extraordinary powers and it is for this reason they were expected to create these figurines of animals as offerings to the saints.

The existence of a wooden church in Dolni Vitavice is referred to in documents dating from 1355.

In 1767 Count Josef Schwarzenberg had a new church built which was dedicated to St Linhart and opened in 1770. The church takes the form of a rotunda of 34metres in diameter with a high tower in a bulb shape.

The construction of a dam sealed the fate of Dolni Vltavice. The directors of the Lipno Dam bought the church, the cemetery and the surrounding land and in May 1958 the roof of the church was removed and the church was blown up.

Fonds documentaire sur saint Léonard / Documentary Collection on Saint Leonard

 

Pour faciliter l’enrichissement du fonds documentaire sur saint Léonard (*), a été créé un Comité de lecture qui examinera et appréciera les documents appelés à entrer dans les collections.

Le comité se réunit au moins une fois par an en octobre.

Les ouvrages pouvant provenir de nombreux pays et être composés dans différentes langues, il a été fait appel pour sa composition à quelques experts documentalistes mais aussi à des personnes pratiquant les langues.

La première réunion se tiendra à la Bibliothèque Municipale de Saint-Léonard de Noblat en octobre 2019. /

To encourage the growth of a documentary collection on St Leonard, a reading committee has been established. This committee will meet at least once a year, in October.

These documents will come from a variety of countries and in many languages. The committee includes librarians and people who have linguistic experience.

The first meeting of the committee will take place in the municipal library of St Léonard-de-Noblat in October 2019

Some dates of upcoming activities

 

- 28th October2018, at Niedernkirchen (district of lower Bavaria of Rottal-Inn, Germany), celebration of the feast of Saint Leonard and the 95th anniversary of the celebrations organised annually in honour of the saint.

-6th November, the traditional date of the feast of Saint Leonard in calendars , celebrations and festivities in numerous communities which bear his name.

 - 11th November, in Lenartov, Slovenia, a mass is celebrated in the parish church dedicated to Saint Leonard.

 -Between 11th and 18th November, at Saint-Léeonard-de-Noblat, (France), the festivities surrounding St Leonard and the game of the ‘Quintaine’. During this equestrian game riders on horseback, armed with clubs, destroy a model of a prison in wood.

 - From 20th to 28th November 2018 the participation of a delegation from St-leonard-de-Noblat in Séguénéga (Burkina Faso) and a visit to Kossouka where there is a chapel dedicated to Saint Leonard.

 

 

 News

 

 Germany

 

 The visit of a delegation from Saint Leonhard de Forst-Wessobrunn (Bavaria) to Saint-Leonard-de-Noblat.

A group of around 30 people from the parish of St.Leonhard de Forst visited France this summer and came to St Leonard de Noblat on 5th September.  Their priest, Father Georg Fetsch, celebrated mass in the Collegiate Church, after which there was a friendly exchange between the communities. An invitation was issued for the next Ostensions.

Visit of the Confraternity Sint Leonardus de Zoutleeuw to Zuidschote on 2nd June 2018

“A bus visited Zuidschote …. 50 pilgrims from Zoutleeuw visited the church of Saint Leonard in Zuidschote, which is also dedicated to our patron saint.Father Puype celebrated the mass and Father Hugo Clarerebout preached a sermon on Saint Leonard ; a saint for all times, even for us today. After the mass, everyone gathered in the parish hall for a reception in a warm welcoming atmosphere.

 

 

 

France

 

Visit to the Domaine of Léonardsau (Obernai - Lower-Rhine)

  On 15^th September 2018, the association known as “The Friends of Leonardsau and of the Circle of St Leonard” welcomed visitors on the occasion of the Heritage Days.

The Domaine of Leonardsau is constructed on what remains of a Benedictine college founded in 1109 and partially demolished during the Revolution.  It was restored and has a commune of artists from Alsace, representing all specialties, and which has diffused the movement ‘Art Nouveau’ from the end of the 19^th century throughout the Rhine region.

 

 

 Project to rehabilitate the Church of Saint-Léonard-de-Noyal in the department of Ile and Vilaine.  [Texte de Bernard Fossey]

  The Association of the Friends of Saint Leonard des Rives de La Seiche (on the banks of the Seiche) has, as its goal, the protection and the restoration of the church of St. Leonard en Noyal-Chatillon on the river Seiche. (a few kilometres south of Rennes, Ile and Vilaine, in Brittany)

Built in the 12^th century, its choir is built over a crypt of the same period or even older.  It was strengthened at the end of the 19^th early 20^th century in a current style.  It is now planned to rehabilitate the building. Following the planning process and the preparation of a dossier by the Association, the archeological preventative service of the city of Rennes started a restoration of the crypt and in the church, in September 2018, so as to make an archeological diagnosis of the structure with the intention of taking preventative measures to prevent further deterioration.

 

Celebration in the Church of Saint Léonard de Raches in the department of the Nord (North) on 6^th June 2018 (Information transmise par Daniel Tison) 

 Every year on 6^th June a ceremony in honour of Saint Leonard is held at this church. At the end of the celebration a relic of the saint was presented for veneration by the faithful by the parish priest, Father Mathieu.

Founded by Canon Pierre Villion, this association welcomed, from 1866 to 1966, people who left prison or were in the process of leaving prison, to help them with their reinsertion into normal life through work. These men were offered work and received remuneration thus allowing them to have some resources as they left prison as well as giving them a taste for work.

 Since1969 this association has also helped people with mental problems (more than 200 ) in a variety of services. Joined to this there is a structure with 152 residential places for those who are capable of working. In this way the association has maintained the vision of its founder in the promotion of reinsertion to normal life through work.

 

 

The Netherlands

 

Feast of the 8^th September 2018 at Beek en Donk

Mario van den Elsen was designated King of the Guild of Saint Leonard for the fourth time. After his installation, three sisters of the Precious Blood in Aarle-Rixtel received a cheque for 1000€ from the administrators of the Foundation.  This sum represented the net amount from a cycling tour in 2018 and will be used to help physically handicapped children in the East Cape of South Africa. 

 

 

Portugal

 

 Atouguia da Baleia et Galafura (Portugal) (texte de jean-Louis David)

This year one of the members of the Confraternity of Saint Leonard, Jean-Louis David, went to Portugal to build up the contacts with the two places dedicated to Saint Leonard which are known in this country.

At Atouguia de Baleia knights en route to  the Crusades attached themselves to and helped the King of Portugal to defeat the Moors and chase them from Lisbon. Some of these knights stayed and developed the cult of St. Leonard  which is still present in the beautiful church in which there is a relic of Saint Leonard. Many inhabitants of Galafura, which is situated on the River Douro, came to work in the Limoges region and on their return took the cult of St Leonard with them back to their village. They constructed a chapel overlooking the Douro at the beginning of the 20^th century and they organise a festival over several days with a procession on the 3^rd Sunday of August.

 

  

Russia

We have no knowledge of communities or places dedicated to Saint Leonard in Russia. During a meeting between a tourist delegation from Russia and members of the Confraternity of St Leonard this question was brought up. The explanation could be the rupture between the churches of the East and West during the schism of 1054 but this was not consumed until after 1204, the year of the sack of Constantinople by the crusaders.

The cult of St Leonard went around Europe as from the 11th century.

 

 

International

 

The award of the Montgelas prize on 12^th September 2018

 

Created in 2009 on the 250^th anniversary  of the birth of the Bavarian count, originally from Savoy, Maximillian Joseph Garnerin de Monteglas the prime-minister of the first Bavarian king Max Joseph 1^st, the Monteglas prize is awarded each year  in Bavaria or in France by the Monteglas Society, thus honouring both a Bavarian and a French personality worthy of the spiritual heritage of the founder of the modern Bavarian State while being aware of the life and work of Monteglas and having promoted Franco/German exchanges.
